Edward E. Leamer Bio

Director of the UCLA Forecast and Chief Economist for the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index

Edward Leamer is director of the UCLA Forecast and chief economist for the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index for Ceridian Corp., a global business information services, payment processing and human resources management company. Ed has in-depth knowledge of economic theory, forecasting, trends and statistics and he is responsible for the data analysis portion of the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index.

Ed joined the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1975 and he partnered with the Ceridian team beginning in November 2008. He is an expert in econometric forecasting and economic modeling and is the author of the book Macroeconomic Patterns and Stories. In 2000, Ed became the director of UCLA/Anderson Business Forecast Project. He has carried over his economic and forecasting knowledge to the Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index where he is responsible for constructing the index and compiling a monthly report highlighting its relation to the Industrial Production Index and to the health of the US economy overall.

Prior to joining UCLA, Ed was an Assistant Professor at Wayne State University and Harvard University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Princeton University and a master’s degree in mathematics and a doctorate in economics from the University of Michigan. He has published over 120 articles and five books. His research papers in econometrics have been collected in Sturdy Econometrics, published in the Edward Elgar Series of Economists of the 20th Century.
